Gardening on the Front Range with Exeter-Produced Bone Char

The Callicrate Cattle Company in western Kansas is perhaps the most innovative livestock operation in the United States. Not only are they pioneering mobile slaughter units, but they are also producing bone char with Exeter Charcoal Retorts. Owner Mike Callicrate flew out to Athens, Ohio last Fall to see an Exeter converting wood and bones into valuable products, and he was won over by the simplicity. We brought him his first Exeter back in February and they’ve been cranking out bone char ever since. Much of the output is going into gardens on the Colorado Front Range.
